Intimacy Instructions (research in progress)

Can intimacy be replicated by following instructions from a stranger? We interviewed different people about what does intimacy mean to them, and when do they feel the most intimate with another person, or alone. At the end of the experiment they were asked to create a step by step guide for others to recreate their personal intimate moment.

Instructions for a comforting hug (from a 17 y/o):

1-Let your guard down, here with me in this moment there are no walls, barriers, or fears. If you do have them, just know there’s no judgment. When our bodies touch, collide, and embrace so do we. You have me (all of me) in this moment. And it’s my honor to have you too.

2-Let your warmth and energy be free, and as we put our arms around each other, just know that I am smiling, just because we’re hugging. And that’s enough.

3-The longer my neck rests on your shoulder, and the longer the embrace, the more trust we lay on each other. And the more humanity we shared.

4-Don’t feel rushed, a comforting hug can be the very thing that somebody needs, so if emotions come up please let them. I love you, thank you for loving me too. Dear stranger, friend, lover, I love you.

Instructions for being present during a conversation (from a 32 y/o)

1-Imagine that you are alone in the world with that person.

2-In this reality your phone doesn’t exists, do not touch.

3-When they speak to you, look at them directly in the eyes.

4-Ask little things, and tell them little things.

5-Share pretty energy. So you can open the space to receive pretty energy back.

6-If you have sweets, share them, sweets is always a yes.

7-Relax, stay “open” but don’t loose yourself either.

Instructions of how to sleep in complete peace (from a 26 y/o)

1. The first thing you have to do is to close your eyes. Visualize a garden. Inside the garden find a flower, a bush, a tree, grass, mushrooms… find that thing that simbolices the person you want to sleep with.

2. Observe the representation of that person. Try to see their needs without seeing yours. Try to understand their boundaries.

3. Now, open your eyes.

4. Look directly to the other person. Find beyond their eyes that garden. Remember that image.

5. To sleep in complete intimacy you just have to learn how to care.

Instructions to create the space for tears to fall (from a 23 y/o).

1. Let’s be in complete silence, looking each other’s in the eyes.

2. Take my hand, caress it, hold it tightly, hold it gently.

3. Hug me tight.

4. Embrace me in bed, and let’s just roll around, hugging each other as tight as we can. Roll with me, over and over and over and over again. Hug me so tight I’m left a little bit out of breath.

5.Stop the movement completely.

6. Now look into my eyes, and let the water flow. Let’s both cry together, and let the tears fall down until there’s no more left.
